Chapter Thirty-Six

Eventually, it was done, and she sank into a peaceful slumber. I raised my right hand, palm out. The Legion stopped. Silence suddenly filled the air as I opened my mouth to speak. My voice was hoarse and filled with unshed tears, but thankful.

“She lives. You saved her…” I called out.

The thunder of cheers that rang out was nigh on deafening.

“Boss, what about the Drow and the SporeMother?” Grizz asked.

I lifted my head from where I cradled my love against me, black fury filling my heart. “Bring me the heads of the Drow!” I snarled. “Make them suffer!”

All around me, the Legion growled as the fliers took to the air again, rejoining a battle that had stalled at the hatches of the ship.

“And the SporeMother?” Grizz asked, flexing his fist unconsciously.

“Sehran!” I called, and a few seconds later she was by my side, crouching on one knee and looking at me in question.

“You want me to look after her while you kill it?” she asked, proud that I had called for her, until I shook my head.

“No, for now, she stays with me.” I said. “You told me before that you gain strength and abilities by consuming the souls of sentients, the more powerful, the better?”

“Yes, Lord…” she said, her voice trailing off in confusion, before her eyes opened wide, realization dawning. “…You mean… you’d permit me to…?” she whispered, stunned, as I nodded towards the SporeMother.

“Fuck, yes. Kill her, feed on her, and make sure she feels every second of it,” I ordered. “But before you finish, let everyone hurt her, a cut, a kick, whatever… that’ll be enough to count, right? To get you all the experience?” I asked those around me, their grins already spreading in anticipation.

“Then kill on,” I ordered, already turning back to Oracle.

The Legionnaires roared in approval, rushing the terrible enemy that laid insensate and paralyzed, its only chance at life being the mercy of the Legion.

It found no mercy.

Sehran clambered up its side, her form subtly shifting as she relaxed. Her teeth grew sharper, muscles larger, and her eyes became catlike as she hissed in pleasure, watching the SporeMother that eyed her as she strolled up its side, aiming for its throat.

The huge creature shuddered, almost managing to lurch to its feet, before it collapsed down again, snarling in pain and experiencing an all-too-familiar feeling… fear mixed with hatred.

Sehran leaped into the air, beating her wings and hovering as the SporeMother collapsed. She landed deftly on its massive upper arm. She strolled forwards to squat down next to its head.

Reaching out, she laid a pointed talon on the SporeMother’s face. She slowly drew it down the skin, cutting the tough membrane and allowing blood to run free, before she lifted the talon to her lips and licked it clean with a suddenly forked tongue.

Her eyes slitted in pleasure as she tasted a sentient she had never dreamed she’d be permitted to harvest. To the best of her knowledge, none of her kind had ever savored such a creature.
